Softening occurs when total dissolved solids in water are within the application's limitations, and calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged with sodium ions. As a result, total dissolved solids stay the same, but sodium salt is transformed into a highly soluble form.

For restoring sodium ions in the resin bed, the softening unit includes a cation exchanger that is replenished with sodium chloride salt. It is mostly used for cooling and boiler feed at low pressures.
